Hi
My name is Amy and I'm a new user. My son Daniel is 6 months old and he got his first tooth today! Well, I'm presuming that is what it is, it is quite sharp and poking through his bottom gum.
We live in Addingham and we like going for walks.

Hi Amy
Welcome to MoorMums!
I hope you enjoy the site. Frank and I also enjoy walking. We're planning to organise some MoorMums walks if you are interested in taking part? Details will be posted on the site.
It would be great if all new users could introduce themselves like you have!

Hi, my name is Diane and my little fella is Isak. He will be 6 months old on Monday (yay) and has 2 bottom teeth. We have just started weaning, neither of us are enjoying it at the moment and I am really desperate to give Baby Led Weaning a go and ditch the blender. Would love to hear from anyone else that is Baby Led Weaning too, I don't think the HV at Ilkley are too keen.

Welcome to the Forum Diane :D
How long have you been weening for - we found that it took quite a while for Frank to get the hang of it. During that time there was a lot of screaming and a lot of mess, but it's worth it in the end. They key is not to give up too early.
[To be fair, there still is a lot of screaming and a lot of mess, but not as much as there was before!]
Hopefully there have been some improvements since your post two days ago!

Hi Diane,
First time poster here, so bear with me!
My little girl Izzy is nearly 7 months and we've been doing baby led weaning for the past few month. We started off on the purees at about 5 and a half months and she complied but wasn't really excited by it. She then got a really bad cold and that put her off completely. When I tried again she just wouldn't have it at all - she'd open her mouth precisely 3 times and then grab hold of the spoon and parry my every shot. It was really frustrating for all of us and she wore a lot more of it than went in. My MIL then showed me an article about BLW and it seemed like a very sensible approach so we gave it a try and she seemed much happier putting food in her mouth that way than by me fighting her with a spoon.
She's got a lot better at it now, and although it is quite messy, it's nowhere near as bad as I was expecting (haven't tried any sloppy food yet tho!). Can't say that all that much is going in yet, but that isn't really much of a worry at the moment and I'm sure she'll get the hang of it soon. She'll try pretty much anything I give her now, which is great. She is showing a bit too much enthusiasm for buttery carbs tho - i think she is taking after her mother!
I would really recommend reading Gill Rapley's book (available at the library) and also have a look at http://babyledweaning.com and its forum which is full of lots of good advice and hilarious pictures of mucky babies!
We live in Yeadon and our HV didn't even mention BLW as an option, although she was quite pleased to hear we were trying it. Strange how all the HVs in this area have different ideas - I hear they're all for it in Otley.
Good luck with it all, and hopefully there'll be a few more BLWers surfacing soon...

Hi all
Not sure if this will help any of you weaners out there, but here goes! I started weaning at 5 months because Ruben was starving. He still remained a boob addict but loved his food too. The first stages really were just baby rice and breast milk, but this went down a treat. I kept it simple and just stuck to this until the whole action was established, about two to three weeks. Once that was done and Ruben was into it, I introduced purees. My only advice is, if it isn't happening, don't make it a fight. Your baby won't starve, if they're hungry they'll eat! Making food time stressful for you both won't help either of you and will establish meal times as a stress time. If it isn't happening, walk away and try later on in the day.
One way around fighting was to put finger foods on the table for him to mess with, rice crispies were good (and still are) but of course age appropriate things must apply here. Don't rush them feeding themselves, give them a spoon and other finger foods to mess with and you feed with another spoon. Expect mess, but again if they're throwing it, don't get angry, they're exploring and finding out what this food thing is about, it's not a telling off game in my opinion.
Ruben is now 15months and feeds himself. He eats three meals a day and is varied in his choices. He loves roasted vegetables, houmous, fish fingers, peas, mushed up peas etc and he is very civilised about it all.
I have to admit that there have been times that I was getting frustrated and I had to remind myself to call it a day and that he'll eat when he is hungry. Don't be tempted to panic and give them things you know they'll snack on incase they'll starve! They won't starve and if you introduce 'oh my god they wouldn't eat their lunch items such as biscuits, it won't take long before they know the route to a sweet treat.
My big tip is get yourself a weaning book that suits you as a person and your babies personality, try the libraries as this is a temporary thing!
Good luck

Hi,
My name is Kerry and my daughter, Julia is 15 weeks old today.
I'm not technically a MoorMum, living in Shipley as I do!
We currently go to our local NCT groups and are trying to decide what other activities we'd like to do.

Hi Kerry,
Welcome to MoorMums! Hope you enjoy the site.
Our favourite classes are the free massage in Yeadon, the swimming class in Skipton and the postnatal exercise class at Airedale. These are all free or really good value.
Other good classes are any music class - most babies love singing and making noise - and the sign language classes - although you should prob wait until Julia is 6 months for that.
We are always looking for mums to contribute to the site, so if you would like to share your birth story or do a review of a sling or any other baby products, please get in touch.
Best wishes
Jess

Hi Diane,
How are you getting on with weaning now? We had a bit of a tough time of it with Daniel for a couple of weeks. I think it was because he had a cold and was teething.
I've put in another thread, my best advice about weaning, is to keep reminding yourself that if he's not eating, he's not hungry. Just give up for that meal, don't take it personally, and try again at the next meal.
The Ilkley Health Visitor also gave me good advice: if he's fussing and won''t eat the lovely puree I've made him, don't assume that it is because he doesn't like, say, carrots, and then give him something sweet (e.g.: banana) because you're worried that he needs to eat something. If you do that, it just teaches him that if he makes a bit of a fuss, he gets given something sweet. If he won't eat, he's not hungry. She said to just make sure I give him one meal a day that I know he likes (e.g.: mashed up banana with porridge). Since we've done that, there has been a lot less fuss.
Let us know how you are getting on.
Amy
