Hi
We started weaning yesterday! Very exciting. Anyone got any tips?
I had pear spat back out at me this evening - I thought it was really nice ;)
Is Frank too young? He's only 20 weeks.

went to the weaning chat today which was very illuminating! They've sold the idea of baby led weaning which just seems so much easier and more fun than making up purees. I'm a lot happier to wait having been to that. Providing jacob doesnt become obviously hungry in the meantime - just going to keep going on the boob and then go straight for finger food and a bit of whatever we have.

By going straight onto solid food do you not run more of a risk of choking? Given baby will have gone straight from complete fluid to fairly solid food? Did they have any tips on this?

Maybe ask Carolyn what she thinks. I wouldn't dare but it must be ok or they wouldn't be advocating it. Just be careful about vegetable skins, strings etc. My friend works in A and E says it's usually grapes.

That's why I ask to be honest as Carolyn had a real panic when Max nearly choked and had to be rushed to hospital...he was weaned on puree so not BLW but if frightened her and now it is etched on my mind when I start weaning Charlie. The health visitors in Burley arranged for St Johns ambulance to come and show us what to do if baby chokes when weaning, but I would prefer never to have to put it into practice. I have just been reading on BLW and some of it says they are less likely to choke as long as they can sit up straight, but never to leave them alone just in case ( as if you would!). Just interested really as before Janet mentioned it had never heard of it. Hope you are well?

I just turned to my partner and said "BLW?". He replied "Baby Led Weaning, everyone's heard of it."
Either he's a mind reader combined with astro-physicist or he'd been on the forum earlier on...
Anyway, BLW sounds like fun. Do I open the fridge door and get Frank to point at what he wants?
Oh and after starting Frank on baby rice 2 weeks ago, I have now given up, well, put it on hold. Partly because the health visitor was less than impressed with me starting at 20 weeks and partly because when I didn't give him solids he didn't seem bothered either way. So I'll prob leave it another couple of weeks. I'm freezing up the odd bit of carrot in the mean time.

Hi Lucinda,
I suspected that Carolyn would've been nervous even if that hadn't happened. The job just makes you very cautious. I have a few stories from the ENT surgeons and A and E nurses etched on my memory! Sometimes I wish I hadn't heard about all these things
I think though that if your baby can make it to 6 months BLW should be fine. Maybe just if your baby is ready before be careful. If you go on that course and know what to do then at least you'll be prepared.
I wanted to go to that talk I'd forgotten it was on. BLW does seem very trendy at the moment so I was just interested to see how you do it and how long people have been doing it. If it wasn't safe then surely they wouldn't be suggesting people do it.
