Knitting for baby

Knitting for baby

Knitting used to be something that only grandmas could do…  But now that you have a baby, it somehow seems strangely cool!  Whether you have never knitted before or you are an experienced knitter, we’ve got all the info for you here.

Getting started

You’ll need to learn how to cast-on (ie start), do the basic stitches (knit and purl), and cast-off (finish).
There are books available from the library that will show you how to do this with pictures.

Alternatively, you could look it up on YouTube.  Here is a demo of a cast-on method:

There are also knitting classes run in Ilkley at Create! in the Victorian  arcade.  Their website has details.

Buying wool/yarn

There is currently 10% off all orders at brand new online retailer Serenity Knitting.

Create! in Ilkley is a great wool shop.  They are very helpful and have a good stock of fashionable, good quality yarns.

A cheaper option is to look at what is available on ebay or some online wool retailers – for example, the black sheep has a good selection at competitive prices.

Alternatively, if you fancy a trip out, there is a wool shop within Cold Spring Mill in Cullingworth.

Get started!

Once you’ve worked out the basics, why not get started on a pattern?  Remember to knit in a bigger size than what your baby currently is – it can take quite a while!  But your baby will love you all the more for it…

Knitting groups

There are a few local knitting groups where you can ask questions about patterns, swap tips and just generally chat about knitting.
