MoorMum Sue from Ben Rhydding says:
Harlow Carr gardens are a fantastic place to spend a warm summer’s day. We have visited the gardens with our son (who is now 2) several times, starting from when we was just a few months old. The gardens are beautiful all year round and provide lots of interest and excitement for babies and children of all ages.
As you enter the gardens, you are welcomed by large expanses of lawns, fantastic borders, streams and elegant trees which provide that essential shade for lunch and play. Much of the planting has been designed with children in mind; from willow pirate ships and whales to the log ness monster!
There are also lots of activity areas for toddlers and older children including a children’s play area, log maze and bird hide and feeding station. You can also pick up a free trail map from the Main Entrance which contains an I spy for under 6s with clues and games to help them explore the gardens and learn about its creatures and plants. For more information see the website.
In addition to the permanent children’s activity areas, temporary attractions are provided for toddlers and older children to enjoy. The last time we visited the gardens, we stumbled across headphones suspended from a tree to allow the children to listen to “the sounds of the tree”!
There are two Betty’s Tea Rooms in at the gardens, the first is located at the Main Entrance and the second is found within in the gardens themselves. The latter only has outdoor seating and is very informal – perfect for young children.
There are baby changing facilities in the Main Entrance foyer, in Bettys Tea Rooms and in the toilets by the Study Centre in the garden. Most areas in the garden are pushchair friendly.
Many events take place throughout the year with a family focus. For more information see the website.
Always check that the venue is open before setting off.
